Out of Place
A DOCUMENTARY BY FRIEDERIKE GÜSSEFELD

Kevin, Dominik, and David are among the hundreds of German teenagers placed in what are known as “foreign educational measures.” These programs are designed to help troubled youth get back on the right track throughout Europe.

However, in the midst of the hills and woods of Transylvania, Romania, the pasts of these young men have faded into the background. They are now largely disconnected from their original environments, working on the fields and farms of local Romanian families under the supervision of German educators. Their progress is evaluated through a point-based system, with the aim of preparing them for a more structured life back in Germany.

Yet, within this system, there is little space for their longing for personal freedom, closeness, and a sense of family. Consequently, Kevin, Dominik, and David each forge their own paths to navigate this disorienting situation. It’s a tale of coming of age within a system that raises questions.
